Hap and Jane's great grandsons, Max and Alex are training to be the fourth generation of the Westbrook family to carry on the Hap's Air Service legacy.
Daughter, Diana and her husband Robert are second generation owner/operators of Hap's Air Service.
Hartley (Hap) and Jane Westbrook started Hap's Air Service, Inc. in 1947, in Guthrie Center, IA. Hap returned from flying B-24 bombers in the European theater of WWII, where he spent two years as a POW. They moved the operation to Atlantic, IA in 1952, where they raised their five children and succeeded in taking a small fuel stop and turning it into one of the busiest airports in Southwest Iowa. This success made Hap's Air Service an attractive candidate for the Fixed Base Operator position at Ames Municipal Airport. Hap's made the final move to Ames in 1975. Hap and Jane, along with two more generations of family, were instrumental in making the Ames airport one of the busiest airports in Iowa. Regrettably, in November 2000, the family lost Jane (our heart) and in October 2002, Hap (our leader) suffered a heart attack and passed away due to complications.
Thankfully, Hap and Jane passed on their love of aviation and commitment to other members of their family. Customer satisfaction has remained a priority. Hap's Air Service, Inc. is owned and operated by Hap and Jane's daughter Diana, and her husband, Robert Holden. Both have been working at Hap's since 1975. Robert, Director of Maintenance, is well known for his extensive knowledge of aviation. He has made Hap's Air Service one of the most well known and respected maintenance shops in the Central United States.
Together with the help of their daughter, Christa, they work every day to keep the traditions and values that Hap and Jane started over 65 years ago.
